The 5th grade had the opportunity to attend the opera at the Hyde Cultural Center in Woodstock this week. They were excellent audience members, and were able to experience a new type of event. The costumes and scenery were great, and it gave the students an opportunity to be exposed to a different kind of music.
The students all took their topic 8 algebra test this week. When the students first heard that they would be learning algebra there was some trepedation. However, by the end the class average was a standard grade of a 3. Students should be proud of all that they have accomplished in math this year! I am having students in a way complete an independent study for the new data unit, topic 14. They are all moving at different paces through the lessons, so many of them are utilizing the chromebooks and logging into pearsonrealize so that they can move along at their own pace. Less than 30 days to til the end of the year, and still so much to accomplish. Students should have been sent home with the yellow poetry tea form today with the item you are responsible circled. Please contact your homeroom teacher with any further questions.

I can't believe that on Monday it will be May! Wow, how time flies when we're busy learning :-) There is only a little over 30 days left of school, about 6 weeks when you count the weekends.
With that being said, this is a busy time of year for everyone. There are lots of after school events that bring the school community together at night, as well as some exciting special events during the day. Many students are also very busy with extracurricular activities. Please take time to check your students' planners on a nightly basis, and keep an eye on my weebly for a schedule of upcoming events. Thanks for the continued support! With springtime comes changes to students' daily schedules. I will try to send out as many remind app messages as I can. I will also try to send home a calendar of events that will be affecting your students' schedule. Remind your child to be recording important dates in their planner calendar, as well as referencing the homework boards in each class.
Some important upcoming dates are the Scholastic Book order is due next Friday, April 28th, as well as the permission slip and $5 for the opera is due that date as well. Feel free to contact me with any questions. I can't believe April vacation is finally here! We have had a crazy winter filled with lots of wacky weather. However, it looks like it's going to be a great week to be outside and enjoying warmer temperatures. This will be great for the students, who I think really could enjoy some time outside.
Please keep in mind that the week we return we will be conducting our SBAC testing. As I stated before, breakfast and a good night's sleep will help prepare your students for success. Also, in order to give students a break I may not be assigning homework each night. Students will be able to communicate if it is a homework free night or not. Furthermore, please refer to my last post for the exact schedule the week we return. Students will not be meeting with all of their classes each day. Hi Parents,
We are starting our practice testing and science CMT the Week of April 3-7. SBAC testing will then occur the week that we return from April Vacation. Please try to make sure that your child gets a good nights sleep and has breakfast in the morning. Research says that this helps kids to be more alert during testing. I have attached our schedule for testing. Students will not be meeting with ALL of their CORE classes daily. Please refer to the schedule to see the rotation. sbac_cmt_5thgrade_modifiedschedule.docx Reading Olympics is wrapping up on Friday, March 31st. If your child's homeroom meets their class reading goal, then they will be able to participate in a celebration on Friday, April 7th. Even if your child's class meets their goal, if your child has not met the minimum 5th grade requirement for the month of 400 minutes, then they will not be able to participate in the celebration because they did not contribute to the accomplishment.
This month has been an exciting one filled with many events. Students have been able to participate in most minutes read, best illustrated scene, best illustrated cover, and wacky recipe creation. The 5th grade teachers are really excited about the energy and the excitement that we have been observing from some of our students. This is a great event each year that helps students reach for the stars, and get hooked into reading! Wow, and to think we thought Spring had sprung! We're back to snow covered playgrounds and gusty winds. With snow, comes snow days, and sometimes it's tough for students to get back into the flow of school. Please check in with your student to make sure that they are completing their homework assignments on a nightly basis. Also, we are half way through our Reading Olympic month. Please make sure that your child is reading nightly, and that you are signing off on their log nightly.
SBAC and the Science CMT is approaching quickly. With that said, there is still lots of content to cover in math prior to the administration of the test. Please try your best to send your student to school daily, unless they are plagued by one of the many yucky germs flying around our school. This school year's winter has been full of wacky weather patterns and inconsistent days of school. With another storm on the horizon for Tuesday, it is important to remind your students to keep up to date with their assignments in their BFF and planner. Students have assignments due throughout the week, and sometimes with a day out of school, they forget about their obligations.
Students will have a performance task with partners the day they return. This could be Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday depending on the storm. There are many resources available on my Google Classroom to review multiplying and dividing fractions. Also, please make sure that you are signing your student's reading log NIGHTLY. This is a change during the month of Reading Olympics. Students cannot get credit for their minutes if the log is not initialed. We had an exciting Friday kicking off our Reading Olympics with our opening ceremonies. Red, blue, and green filled the hallways as students represented their homeroom teams. The positive energy filled the library as students marched in showing off their flags. And then you could have heard a pin drop when students cuddled up with their personal book, and stop, dropped, and read for 45 minutes.
Please promote your students to read at home this month, and talk about their books with them. There a bunch of awards that will be handed out at the end of the month celebrating the many successes. Each class will also get to participate in a reading celebration before April vacation if their class reaches their goal, and each student reaches their personal goal!. Our annual 5th grade activity, Reading Olympics, is starting next Friday. The students will be participating in the opening ceremonies in school.
All students were sent home with a letter explaining the changes to their reading log this week. Students will also be participating in a variety of Olympic events throughout the month BOTH at home and at school. Each homeroom will be competing against each other to try to read the most amount of minutes. The class minutes will be tracked in the hallway on a bulletin board all month. The winners of the various events will also be documented there as well. Each student is setting a personal reading goal. Ask them to see the google doc :-) If the class reaches the class goal, there will be a celebration for that class for all members who reached their personal goals. Feel free to email any of the 5th grade teachers if you have any other questions. |
