Students have been accomplishing so much during our first two months together. Please make sure to check your students planner nightly to learn about what their homework is as well as other "need to know" information. We are also trying to promote independence this year and having students be active participants in their learning and decision making.
Students should start to think about designing their instruments at home for Mrs. C-N, and they should continue to work on their math facts for me! Students continue to demonstrate a lot of dedication to their mathematical tasks (and their research for the writer's workshop). I continue to be impressed by their dedication to improving their skills and knowledge.
I am also trying a new model in our math class where students decide which activities they participate in for a lesson. Giving students choice, and therefore a voice in their learning I believe is helping to maintain their level of engagement. Students can choose from electronic resources, small group instruction with a teacher, practice problems, and problem solving opportunities. Students will also begin to participate in more google discussions where they have to explain their thinking about solving a problem. Students have been having a great time in my classroom. I am so impressed by their dedication to their educational tasks, and their collaboration with each other. Students need to continue to practice their math facts in preparation for our upcoming math unit on multiplication, and learning the algorithm. In addition, students need to practice subtraction with borrowing and regrouping. Students also have a math test this Friday on place value, decimals (adding and subtracting and rounding). The students have been working so hard during the first month with many accomplishments. They just finished their first process writing piece, a personal essay on various topics including "brothers can be so annoying", "mothers are so helpful", and "trying new things can be exciting". They also have completed their first math unit on place value, and are just about finished with our second unit on decimals. The students should be proud of all their successes in their classes during the first month.
Students will be starting their research essay this coming week. Some students have started to create a plan for an enrichment project. They are able to choose their topic, conduct research, and create a project of their choosing to demonstrate their learning. I can't wait to see what their creative minds produce! I hope everyone enjoys the long weekend and gets an opportunity to enjoy some fall activities! |
