There's nothing like a New England. One day you have two feet of snow on the ground, and the next day it's 60 degrees out. I hope that everyone is enjoying a nice long weekend, and is able to get out of the house and enjoy the warm air.
There has been a lot of sickness traveling through the 5th grade classrooms during the last few weeks. We are doing the best we can to clean down the tables and stop the spread of germs. If your student is not feeling good, please think about checking in with the nurse and having them stay home for the day. The germs are spreading so quickly, we've had 2-4 students out in each homeroom. I can't wait for Spring!

Wow, what a week! Three days of school and two snow days; New England winters are always surprising us! As we get into our snowy season, try to send your students to school with snow gear so that they can fully take advantage of their outdoor time at recess.
This week we will try to get back into the groove of learning, and in my class we will be focusing on topic 10, adding and subtracting mixed numbers, and writing a compare-contrast essay. Keep a look out for information regarding the 5th grade Reading Olympics coming up in March. This week is "Start with Hello" week for the 5th and 6th graders at HMS. This week was started by the Sandy Hook Promise organization after the tragic events at Sandy Hook Elementary.
The goal of the week is to bring awareness about the social aspect of school, and how to promote inclusion of all it's members. Check out the digital backpack for a list of events that students will be participating in throughout their school day in various classrooms. In honor of this week, Thursday is wear green day! This winter has been full of illness. Students and teachers alike having been impacted by brutal colds and stomach bugs. The winter is always a tough time with windows shut, and students in close quarters inside, so illness tends to spread.
Keep an eye on your students. The best way to limit the spread of the germs, is to keep students home for day if at all possible. This is not always ideal, but these "super bugs" having been running rampant throughout the school. Hopefully with the groundhog saying it's going to be an early spring, spring will be here before you know it. Fingers crossed, we are trying to get students outside for recess as much as possible depending on the weather. Hoping for a very healthy spring. Parents and Guardians; today sent home with your students was a notice regarding Valentine's Day. We do not celebrate or participate in classroom parties for the various holidays that occur during the year.
This notice just outlines that if your student would like to bring in Valentine's day cards for their classmates, please follow the guidelines, including not sending in candy. I have attached the flyer that was sent home with your student. Contact your child's homeroom teacher with any additional questions. Thanks for your cooperation. valentines_day_letter.docx Lots of fun and engaging activities are happening throughout the halls of HMS. Students have started to participate in after school enrichment clubs, they are participating in new learning and engaging units of study in just about every content area, and they will get the opportunity to participate in an assembly on Monday.
When you get the chance, take the opportunity to talk to your students about what is happening here at HMS. What are they learning? What do they find most interesting? What do they still want to learn more about? The students are overflowing with news ideas and interests, and we continue to try to promote those here at HMS. We have started to working in another math domain, number sense with fractions, and will be working in this area of math for the next few months. The fifth grade students have a variety of backgrounds with regards to their prior knowledge of this concept. If students have time, it would benefit them to watch some of the videos I post into our google classroom, and log into Learn zillion and complete some practice work there as well.
This weekend is a long weekend, no school Monday for MLK day, so enjoy! Rest up, and let's try to stay healthy with all of these super bugs traveling about. I can't believe that it is already January, wow how this year is flying by. We already about half way done! Now that we are in the midst of the winter months, please make sure that your student is coming prepared to go outside for recess (jackets, hats, gloves, boots, snowpants). Students will be going outside as long as it is at least 20 degrees with the windchill. If students do not wear boots and/or snowpants, they will be restricted to the blacktop and any activities permitted in that area.
Also, during the upcoming two weeks students will be taking their mid-year STAR testing. This assessment allows us to progress monitor the students throughout the year and across the grade level. It helps to inform our instruction, and make plans to meet the students needs. On the days of testing, please try to make sure that your student has breakfast and is well rested. Students tried out this fun craft today, try it at home before break... Check out this video.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YQtee_BoQH0 Students have one more week until holiday break. Students will have normal schedules up until Thursday. Thursday afternoon they will be able to participate in a fun 5th grade activity. Students will then attend the success assembly and pep rally during our half day on Friday. Students will also participate in some fun 5th grade activities. If you have not sent your student in with two holiday cards, please do so by Wednesday, 12/21. Wishing all families a very happy holiday season and a great start to 2017.
