I feel like the fifth grade, students and teachers alike, have started to get into a routine and adjust to the new schedule. With that being said, there are a lot of new changes for your kiddos.
Please make sure to check your students' planners nightly. This will allow you to be aware of their homework assignments as well as upcoming tests and projects. If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to reach out to one of the 5th grade teachers.

School pictures will be next Thursday morning, September 21st. The 5th graders have pictures first thing in the morning, so they can bring a change of clothes if they would like.
Also, please mark your calendars with the Curriculum Night Date of Wednesday, September 27th. The 5th grade team will be sharing lots of helpful information, including homework and helpful tools at home. Another school year is about to begin, and I'm sure your students have mixed emotions. Trying to hold on to the last few days of summer, but at the same time eagerly anticipating a new year in a new school with new teachers. The 5th grade team is excited to welcome a new group of students to HMS. Many have already entered our hallways visiting with their older siblings, and for some this will be a new experience. There are many changes happening at HMS this year with our schedule (advisory, STEAM, & WIN) to name a few. The staff is excited to roll out this new schedule with the students, and provide them with the most well rounded educational experience. Over the first 1.5 weeks of school students will be receiving a number of handouts. Some will be from the HMS office, others will be from the 5th grade team, and some will be from just me about math. Please take the time to read everything, and contact me with any questions. I hope everyone had a wonderful summer. I can't wait to hear all about it from the students. Below is just one picture of how I spent my summer days. I just heard about this great event happening in our own town related to our colonial unit. If you are around next Saturday, June 10th, check it out!
pdf_newest_colonial_faire_2017__willington_public_library.pdf I can't believe that we are approaching our last week of school. It's been an exciting year filled with tons of learning, and lots of exciting opportunities for our students to take part in. The week of June 5-June 9 is our last FULL week of school. Please check in with your students regarding the finishing of final projects. They have a math performance task, colonial project, persuasive letter to Mr. Craig about chocolate milk, and a second colonial pen pal letter.
Homework should be minimal next week, so this will be a great opportunity for students to get caught up on these larger assignments and projects if necessary. Grades close on Friday, June 9th, and teachers have to submit them on Monday, June 12, so there is no room at this time of year for extensions. Also, please make note that our colonial field day is also June 9th. As this class is about to enter sixth grade, we are trying to build independence among our scholars. We are setting deadlines for assignments, and trying to provide support and benchmarks along the way. Some students are struggling with time management and meeting these deadlines.
With such a busy time of year, please talk with your students each night about their assignments. When possibly, check in and ask about their major projects. Visit this website, and don't hesitate to e-mail me with questions. We have a strong group of scholars, and I'm trying build the skills that they will need have in order to be successful at the middle school grade levels. This is a very busy week here in the 5th grade hallway. Students will be taking their last STAR testing of the year on Tuesday (Math) and Wednesday (ELA). We also have the 4th graders visiting us on Thursday, and the Connecticut Historical Society visiting us on Friday.
The 5th grade team will be contacting you soon if you volunteered for the Colonial field day on June 9th. Thank you in advance for offering to share your time with our grade level for an afternoon during this busy time of year. Please don't hesitate to reach out to your homeroom teacher if you have any specific questions on upcoming events. :-) It is that time of year when there is so much going on here at HMS. Students will be arriving home with lots of different papers informing you of upcoming events.
For example, this week the 5th grade team sent home packet of blue papers. Included in this packet was a permission slip for our Old Sturbridge Village Field Trip, including a chaperone form, and a form asking for volunteers for our Colonial Field Day. Please take the time to review the forms and return them as soon as possible. Also, recently we sent home a yellow form requesting items for our poetry tea, which is on May 18. Students should have returned home with the item we are requesting from you signed. Still to come will be paperwork regarding the Connecticut Historical Society visit and schoolwide field day just to name a few. Thanks in advance for all your support to help make these events a success! |
