Lots of paperwork has been coming home over the last week. Please ask your student about it. The opera permission slip needs to be returned with $4, hopefully before April vacation. The Reading Olympics Celebration movie permission slip needs to be returned by Thursday, April 12th as well. Students will also be taking the mult. and div. facts check on Monday, and that paperwork will need to be returned as well.
The 5th grade teachers were so proud of all the hard work that the students committed to during the month of March. The 5th graders read almost 90,000 minutes during the month. What an amazing accomplishment. Students were celebrated for their successes at the closing ceremonies on Friday, April 6th. Ask to see your students certificates when you have the chance. SBAC testing for the state will be starting after April vacation. We will be having practice tests the first week, followed by 1.5 weeks of testing. Please make sure your students are getting a good nights sleep, and are eating breakfast and bringing a snack. This year we will have an incentive program for students to do their best. The students are hardworkers, and I know they can put their best foot forward and aim for success. During the next few weeks, we have lots of exciting events that will be impacting our schedule. We have an opera preview visit to the school, followed by a field trip to the opera after April vacation. We also have the closing ceremonies for our successful month of Reading Olympics, as well as a reading celebration. In addition, SBAC testing is approaching, and are schedule will be modified during the few weeks following April vacation to accommodate the testing schedule.
We have a lot of fun events planned as we start to near our last quarter of the school year. Students will have our closing ceremonies for the Reading Olympics of April 6th. We will celebrate and recognize all of the amazing achievements that have occurred during the last month. Please make sure that you are signing, and students are bringing in their reading log daily.
Students will be going to see the opera Jack and Jill, on Tuesday, April 24th at Hyde Cultural Center. They will have a preview at school on April 3rd. Please keep an eye out for a permission slip around April 2nd. We are also looking to visit Plimoth in May when students are learning about the colonial time period. Keep an eye out for updates about this trip as well. The Reading Olympics is in full swing. Please make sure to sign your student's log nightly in order for them to earn their minutes towards their goal Hopefully your student was able to accomplish a bunch of reading during the snow days.
SBAC testing: You may be receiving information regarding this topic via Digital Backpack or other forums during the next few weeks. SBAC testing is scheduled for when the students return from April break. All we ask of students is to do their best, and try their hardest. We will honor this hard work by limiting or eliminating homework and trying to plan some enrichment activities to participate in when they are not testing. Please try to make sure that your child: gets a good nights rest, eats breakfast, and comes with a snack. Don't hesitate to reach out to a 5th grade teacher with anymore questions. Opera: Students will be traveling to the Hyde Cultural Center for experience with the arts right after April vacation to see the opera, Jack and Jill. They will get a preview of the performance by a singer and a pianist the first week in April. Please keep your eye out for the permission that week as well. Due to the early dismissal on Friday, the opening ceremonies will take place on Monday, March 5th. Please have your students wear their class color, and bring a book to school.
Keep an ear out, and ask your students about upcoming events that will be happening throughout the entire month of March during the Reading Olympics. Students will have a math quiz on multiplying and dividing fractions at the end of the week, and a performance task applying their knowledge at the beginning of next week. It's that time of year for our 5th grade annual Reading Olympics month. This is a great event that gets students excited about reading, allows them to participate in a multitude of events highlighting a variety of the multiple intelligences that they are learning about in advisory class, and have friendly competition amongst the classes.
The opening ceremonies will be on Friday, March 2nd. Students should wear their class color (5G-green, 5H-red, and 5S- blue). The ceremony will start after recess. Students will be receiving a new reading log this month, and it will be need to be signed nightly. You should have received a letter outlining this on Friday. Please contact any 5th grade teacher with any more questions. Tuesday, February 20th will be our second Success Assembly. It will take place in the gymnasium from 7:30-8:30. All parents and family members are welcome to attend. Students will be recognized for CORE and Unified Arts related classes, as well as clubs they may participate in.
Please contact your child's homeroom teacher with any further questions. Students participated in lessons instructed by our enrichment teacher, Ms. GC, for the "Start With Hello" week. This program was created by the Sandy Hook Promise foundation. It is a social learning opportunity that highlights supporting your peers, rather than participating in isolating behaviors.
UPDATE on SCHOOL CALENDAR: As hopefully all of you received a letter from our superintendent, Dr. Jacoby, outlining that change to our school schedule. Due to the numerous amount of snow days our district has already called, the professional development days scheduled for Feb. 20 & 21 have been cancelled. Those days will be rescheduled for the end of the year, and students will be attending school on Feb. 20 & 21 that week as well. UPCOMING EVENT: Please keep an eye out for paperwork outlining our annual Reading Olympics 5th grade event. This will take place during the month of March, and there will be many ways that students can participate throughout the month. Sickness continues to be all around us during this tough winter season. If your student is out of school for multiple days, please try to check in with their teachers to find out what work needs to be made up. Or, remind your student to check in with their teachers upon their return so that they do not fall behind.
Also, many of the 5th grade teachers use Google Classroom on a regular basis. This is a great place to look at for resources and assignments. READING OLYMPICS: ON ANOTHER NOTE: -Keep your eye out in the next few weeks for information regarding our annual Reading Olympics, which will be taking place during the month of May. |
